1991 GMC INDY SYCLONE

GMC Truck has a longstanding history in IndyCar as the official support truck for the race series. In 1992, three Syclones were converted into Indy Pace trucks by applying Indianapolis 500 graphic decals on the fenders, doors, and beds of the trucks. These trucks were known as the 1991 GMC Indy Syclones. Later on, one of these three trucks was converted again and became the PPG Syclone.

For Syclone owners who wanted the Indy Pace Truck look, decal kits were available for purchase from Graphik Concepts, the original printer and suppliers of the Syclone, Typhoon, and Sonoma GT decals. They still offer the Indy decal kit today.

The Syclone was never used as an official pace vehicle for the Indy 500, rather the new for 1993 Cadillac Allante with the Northstar engine was selected to be the Pace Car.

After the Indy 500, the 1993 Allantes were all shipped to the Detroit Grand Prix, held June 7. One Syclone also went, and a new orange tone color Sierra. It led the field for the parade laps, then left the track, and the Allante - driven by Emerson Fittipaldi, paced the beginning of the race. Afterwards, one of the 3 Syclones was painted with wild graphics and kept in the GM collection until 2009. This truck would become the now-known PPG Syclone Pace Truck. The other two Syclones were auctioned along with the Cadillac and GMC truck fleet after the races. Syclone #2270 eventually went to Australia. Syclone #2267 was a total loss in Georgia in 2008. Today, the PPG truck is in a private collection in Colorado.
