The 1992 Pilot GMC Typhoon for sale is 1 of 3 trucks that was sold to PAS in 1992. Recently the community saw the sale earlier this year of the GMC Syclone Pilot Truck 001 which former PAS president, Chuck Mountain, owned. This 1991 GMC Syclone was reportedly sent to PAS, Inc. when new and remained in the company’s possession until Mr. Mountain purchased it in January 1994 before PAS closed its doors for good. Unfortunately, Mr. Mountain recently passed away, and the pilot Syclone was listed on the popular bidding site Bring-A-Trailer where it was listed at no reserve and ended at $80,000 on 8/4/2022.
Along with the Pilot GMC Syclone, Mr. Mountain also owned 1 of the 3 1992 Pilot GMC Typhoons. Like the Syclone, PAS received these Typhoons and Mr. Mountain ultimately purchased one of them for his own personal use. The Typhoon owned by Mr. Mountain is truck #0010. The two other Pilot Typhoons are listed as #0009 and #0011 and their whereabouts are currently unknown.
The 1992 Pilot GMC Typhoon from Chuck Mountain is currently up for sale and is listed on Hemmings for bidding.
This 1992 GMC Typhoon—finished in one of the less-common color combinations offered in 1992—is reportedly one of the first 10 of these vehicles built, and it was the property of Charles Mountain, the former President of Performance Auto Services of Troy, Michigan, the specialty builder that constructed these special SUVs (and the Syclone pickups) for GMC. The selling dealer—a nationally recognized restorer and vintage car specialist—says that it has a “plethora of documentation that supports the car,” including the original Bill of Sale written by the President of PAS to himself. The vehicle is also transferred with “many classified documents that were never seen by the public.” The selling dealer refers to this Typhoon as “a running and driving project” that was under refurbishment when the original owner passed away.
Hemmings goes further to discuss some of the generalized history of the GMC Typhoon along with giving details and descriptions of the truck for sale. Overall the Pilot Typhoon looks as if it was mostly sitting while Mr. Mountain owned it. With just under 47k on the odometer and still riding on the original Firehawk SVX tires, we would consider this a lower mileage truck. We do see some surface corrosion in the engine bay and some very light surface rust on the underside of the frame, both of which can be easily cleaned up. The paint looks to be in good condition with a few chipped areas. The most noticeable exterior issue would be the missing cladding pieces on the driver's fender and rear quarter panel, however it appears the truck does come with replacements. The interior does have some wear and tear and could use a deep clean. Overall, the truck seems to be completely stock and in overall really good condition. The official PAS documentation and extra goodies that come with the sale of the truck definitely help add to the value.
With Chuck Mountain's Pilot Syclone going for $80,000, it is hard to say what the Pilot Typhoon will bring. We are unsure why the choice was made to list the Typhoon on Hemmings rather than Bring-a-Trailer given the successful sale of the Syclone. Our initial thought would be that the Typhoon may not get as much exposure now, which may be beneficial to the winning buyer. If you are looking for a GMC Typhoon and want a truck that has direct historical value and is one of the more rare color combos, this may be the truck to bid on! Good luck to those who are planning to make their best offer!
