  • Garnet Red '93 Ty #1579

I picked up this Typhoon in the evening of March 27th, 2014. It was the first of three Typhoons I would end up buying over the next 8 months, but at the time I did not know that, I was just excited to have another Typhoon in another color besides white. I still have a White/White that I've owned for 18 years and I previously had a White/Gray that I fixed and later resold.

I'll upload pictures another time after I find and sort through them, but for now I'll give you the details of the project that was on my trailer, ready to come to its new permanent home.

    For those who don't know, the 1993 Garnet Red/Argent Gray is the rarest production color any Typhoon had been painted, with a total of 24 examples rolling off the Pontiac, MI assembly line before heading to PAS Inc. to be turned into finished Typhoons. Those 24 Garnets can be broken down further by their "options" at the time, being (U1C) CD Player w/ 5-Band EQ and (V54) Roof Luggage Carrier. There could be four possible combinations with those options, trucks that had a tape deck and no luggage carrier, trucks that had a CD player and no luggage carrier, trucks that had a tape deck and a luggage carrier and lastly, trucks that had bother the CD player and the luggage carrier. The production breakdown is as follows;
Tape Deck / No Luggage Carrier 3
Tape Deck / Luggage Carrier 6
CD Player / No Luggage Carrier 5
CD Player / Luggage Carrier 10

#1579 has both the CD Player and the Luggage Carrier, however the original CD Player was missing when I got it, in fact there was no radio in the truck at all, along with a ton of other parts that were missing, but we'll get into that later. From what I have been able to determine, this truck was dealer ordered truck for it's original owner in Long Island, NY. It lived there from 1993 - 1995 then changed hands and came to New Jersey from 1995 - 1998. I can only guess that it just stayed in NJ but wasn't on the road for the following 6 years because there are no registration records until it was titled in Florida in 2005. If it went for sale publicly, I don't know how I would have missed it as I was heavy into the SyTy game at that point in time. Nevertheless, it stayed in FL from 2005 - 2009, then it was sold in 2010 and stayed with that owner until 2014 when I purchased it. I know it sat stationary for a number of years and probably more than owner had it parked for a considerable amount of time, including myself since I've had it for over 4 years and haven't put a single mile on it, but hopefully that will change in 2019.

So for the nitty gritty details, along with the radio being missing when i got it, the front fender cladding was missing on both sides, the turbo was also missing, it had an engine in it but it had never been started. The main engine harness was missing, the entire front body harness was missing, some of the ABS wiring was there and the small harness for the fuel injectors was there, that was it for wiring under the hood. The core support had one bolt in it and no nut on the bottom. I believe the radiator, hoses, belts, pulleys, upper intake, transmission inspection cover and a bunch of other assorted parts and brackets were all in the back of the truck or rear seat floor. The body cladding had been pulled off and painted Garnet Red to match the body at some point (looks horrible), so that needed to be removed and brought back to the original Argent Gray. The body, frame and suspension were all clean and rust free, however the paint was super chalky from years of sitting untouched, and it appears the tailgate my have been painted or clear coated at some point, as was the drivers door, but only from the body line up and around the window, the middle of the door looked as the rest of the body did.

Project Goals. Being such a rare color, the only proper way to handle this basket case of a truck was to restore it back to stock as humanly possible. It will have some reliability upgrades such as fuel pump, plug wires, and some other undetectable bits here and there. I have the original transmission for the truck, that was supposedly rebuilt, but I am going to install a known good trans out of another Typhoon I had and keep that one clean and safe in my basement. If I do ever sell the truck, I will install or include that transmission with the sale. The plastic crossover tubes for the intake setup are known to crack and kill turbos, and even though I have 3 good crossovers, I'm hoping to swap those out with a more reliable fiberglass or carbon fiber reproduction. I have obtained an original, correct CD Player w/ EQ a couple of years ago, along with a few other bits and pieces that were needed on the interior.

Man... that looks like a PROJECT! haha. Hate to see such a rare ty in that condition, or any ty for that matter. Hard to tell from the pics but maybe that original paint can be buffed out? 93's had clear coat? err only some of them did? I'd do the cladding in argent, but that's just me. Garnet/garnet just looks weird. Good luck with it! Looking forward to seeing the progress!

The paint is too far gone in my opinion, there are a couple spots where the paint appears to be thin, stone chips on the front edge of the hood and grill, there is a tiny rust spot right under the passenger door mirror and the grand finale of body work that needs to be done.... based on the date of the ASC decal in the glovebox, either the dealer or the original owner had a sunroof installed upon delivery. That shit pisses me off and will be removed, filled and welded. I already have a complete roof section from another Typhoon, so I can replace any roof bracing that my have been cut out or damaged.

None of the Syclones or Typhoons had clearcoat from the factory. The ONLY exceptions to that may have been some of the test color trucks, but the production colors were all single stage to our knowledge.

I'd do the cladding in argent, but that's just me. Garnet/garnet just looks weird. Good luck with it! Looking forward to seeing the progress!
Yup, I said the same thing in my original post above, the Garnet/Garnet looks horrible, it will be going back to stock colors, however it will be base/clear this time.

Here are some more pics of progress from back when I was actually working on it....

      3/31/14
Started cleaning it up, started removing cladding and decided to drop the gas tank to see what nightmare was happening in there.... it will be getting a new fuel system. I already have a new tank, sender, pump and lines waiting to go back in it.

..... and that's basically the last major thing I've done to it. It's been sitting in storage collecting dust for the most part since then. I have found and collected a bunch of parts and pieces for the truck over the past couple years, so even though I haven't physically touched it, I have been doing things for it.

Ahhh good to know! I thought I had read somewhere about some 93's having clear.... but as you guys know a lot of bad intel gets thrown around, especially with these trucks. But I'll take the good word from the gurus as gospel!

So it's been a while since I've made an update here, sadly it's been over 2 years and although I have some updates to add, it's still not exactly where it should be at this point (thanks world pandemic!)

#carlisleprep19 begins. Decided that even though it didn't run, it was time to make this thing at least look the part, or as least as much as possible. Pulled it out of hibernation and gave it it's second bath in 5 years.

#carlisleprep19 continued. For the better part of the next 3 evenings, I spent cleaning and buffing the faded and abused paint into what resembled the glossy finish it once had.

Once the paint was correct as best as it could be, it was time to start on all of the other things the truck needed to look complete. This included the wheels and tires, fortunately I have multiple sets of factory wheels and two complete sets of factory Firestone SVX tires. I wouldn't recommend driving around on 30 year old tires, but tossing them on as rollers to park it at a truck show, why not? I swapped two tires onto the wheel to replace one that showed a little more wear, then it was onto cleaning and washing. Lastly, I pulled four of the cleanest center caps from my collection and gave them a quick buff on one of my spare wheels.

For the remainder of the month, I spent cleaning the interior, swapping seats and door panels for whatever the best ones were in my collection of parts. I did the same for the cladding, as I was crunched for time, there was no way I was going to be able to repair and paint all the cladding that came on the truck. I ended up installing most of the cladding that I pulled from the rusty Forest Green Typhoon that I chopped up years earlier, except for the fender arches and rear bumper. Those three pieces came from my White Typhoon that I've owned for 20 years but hasn't seen pavement in the last 14, so it really won't miss them.

2020.... f*ck this year. Plan was to get this thing running at the very least. Unfortunately we got hit with a world wide pandemic, everything shut down and I was stuck working from home for the next 4 months. After that, it was back onto house projects for the summer like I'm usually doing, so virtually zero time to work on the truck. I did get the fuel tank prepped and ready to install, including a new sender, pump and felt strips (old felt shown).

Three days before Carlisle, what better time to start #carlisleprep20
Well this couldn't have been a worse time actually. The paint on the original hood was beyond toast, someone had the brilliant idea to clearcoat the original single stage paint and the clear was peeling off all over the place. I decided it would be much easier and quicker to just steal the cowl induction hood off of my White Typhoon and just repaint that Garnet. Monday night was when i was able to apply the first coat, unfortunately in my garage, in August.... not ideal. I noticed a few flaws that I didn't catch when I was wetsanding, plus I had a bug land in it, so I figured it was best to let it dry overnight and fix the flaws and wetsand it again tomorrow.

Well the next day, we were hit it a huge storm and although we sustained no significant damage from it, we were without power for approximately 20 hours, which definitely put a damper in doing any prep for Carlisle and at the time was jeopardizing my attendance as well. Fortunately power returned around 4:00am Wednesday morning, so I was able to get another solid coat on it and let it dry overnight before installing Thursday morning before hitting the road to Carlisle.

Can't wait to see the new wheels on it! Didn't realize how rough this truck used to be. It looked AMAZING at Carlisle!

                            7.22.21

#carlisleprep21 really begins. I started on the wheels by installing the studs into the reverse side of the faces. It was a little more labor to do it now and wrap each stud with painters tape, but I felt it was better than trying to install them all after being freshly painted.

Once the studs were installed and wrapped, the next step was to degrease and prep all surfaces. The wheel centers, center caps and rear barrels received a coat of self etching primer first, followed by a coat of 2K primer. The centers received multiple coats, especially in the pockets to allow me to smooth out and hide the machine lines left my the CNC. If I left the machined finish, I would have left them, but on a painted center, I felt it would just look unfinished.

After priming and wet sanding was finished, it was onto the basecoat. Once again, this went on the centers, center caps and rear barrels. The real challenger was doing the fronts and backs of the centers at the same time, but I came up with a system that seemed to work out well.

Finally it was time for clear. This time all wheel parts were involved. The outer barrels were polished, so no primer or paint involved, which proved to make things a bit more challenging, but eventually everything came out smooth. A quick wet sand and polish and we were on to assembly.

                              7.28.21

Rubber has arrived! With a recommendation from Nate @ Sportmachines, I ended up purchasing Nitto NT555 G2's, size 275/35ZR18 on all four corners.

Went and dusted off the Typhoon. It had been in storage in a remote location and I actually had not seen the truck since December. It went directly to the shop and right onto the lift so I could begin installing setback plates and lowering blocks.

                              8.4.21

After a small delay, I finally got the tires mounted on the freshly painted wheels and got them installed on the Garnet. Now it was time to see how much lower it actually was. Right off the lift, we were down about 2 inches and ultimately after its ride home on the trailer, it settled another 1/2 inch, dropping from 30.5 inches, down to 28 inches from ground to the bottom of the wheel arch.
