HAPPY BIRTHDAY TYPHOON!
PAS, Job #1
August 26, 1991
Today marks the first 1992 GMC Typhoons that would have been going through their final assembly at Production Automotive Services. Happy 33rd Birthday! This picture shows PAS employees at the Auburn Hills Assembly plant. During production, the Syclone, Typhoon, and Sonoma GT were not completed at the GM plants but rather sent as "incomplete" to Production Automotive Services (PAS) for final assembly. PAS's job was to complete the installation of the intercooler system, hang cladding, and mount the center caps to the wheels.
The Typhoon also shares a special birthday with another truck, the Chevy S10! Today in 1981, Chevrolet would start production on the S-Series line of trucks. It was the first domestically-built compact pickup of the big three American automakers. When it was first introduced as a "quarter-ton pickup" in 1981 for the 1982 model year, the GMC version was known as the S-15 and later renamed the GMC Sonoma.
The S10 pictured still resides with GM and is part of their Heritage Collection located in Michigan. GMC did not keep the first 1992 GMC Typhoon but still has the last 1993 GMC Typhoon made, which also is located at GM's Heritage Center. There are pictures of both the S10 and Typhoon parked next to each other on display.
